The Wading River and Shoreham communities share a common heritage that is rich in history and bonded by commerce and businesses that date back to the 1800’s, when small sailing vessels were constructed in shipyards on the beaches. The vessels were loaded with cordwood from the local woodlands and sailed to New York City and up the Hudson River to brick firing kilns.
Wading River was settled in 1671 and still has the character of a classic New England town. There are steepled churches, a village green with duck ponds, an old cemetery, and homes dating back to the colonial period.
Shoreham was settled in the early 1900's as a summer community. Prior to it’s incorporation in 1913, shortly after the turn of the century, an experimental laboratory was constructed for for Nikola Tesla, who did work in the fields of alternating current and high-frequency electronics.
The friendship and business partnerships continue today. Though our Chamber we are proud to promote our businesses, schools, parks, beaches, farms and local attractions.
